Which IELTS test should you book for international study?

A clear starting checklist for test type, target country, institution requirements and booking timing.

The Quadrant Network · Published

Start with the purpose of the test

IELTS Academic is commonly used for higher education, while General Training is designed for migration and some work or training routes. A visa process may require a specific approved test, so the destination alone is not enough to decide.

  • Study, work or migration purpose
  • Institution requirement
  • Visa requirement
  • Academic versus General Training
  • UKVI requirement where relevant

Check every score requirement

An institution may specify an overall band and minimum component scores. Confirm both for the exact programme and intake. Do not rely on a requirement copied from another course or an older application cycle.

  • Overall band
  • Minimum component scores
  • Validity window
  • Accepted test format
  • Conditional-offer deadline

Choose timing with a contingency

Book early enough to receive results before the application or visa deadline and leave time for a retake if required. One Skill Retake may be available only where specific conditions are met and should not be assumed as the primary plan.

Use an official booking route

Verify the test centre and booking path through an official IELTS owner or authorised test-centre listing. Keep the booking confirmation and payment record. Quadrant’s ₹500 campaign benefit is separate from the official IELTS fee and eligibility process.

No. It is a Quadrant-funded campaign benefit for eligible bookings registered through the confirmed route.
